Scotland’s links with the US go way back. Indeed, Scots have been instrumental in the creation of some of the US’s most iconic institutions and companies.
John Paul Jones (1747-1792), from Kircudbrightshire, was the ‘Father of the American Navy’. Dunbar-born John Muir is credited with starting the national park movement in America and David Dunbar Buick, a plumber from Arbroath, set up the Buick Motor Company.
These links are just as strong today. More tourists from the US visit Scotland than from any other country. The US is Scotland’s largest overseas investor and thousands of students know that Scotland is a great place to study.
For a small country, Scotland has had a profound influence not only on the US but also the world.
